Neymar Names Midfielder Arsenal Tried to Sign as the Best in the World

Arsenal have been linked with a long list of elite talents in recent years, but according to Brazilian icon Neymar, one of their near-misses may have turned into the best midfielder on the planet.

While Neymar is no longer at the peak of his powers and is now seeing out his career back at Santos following an underwhelming spell in Saudi Arabia, his eye for talent remains unquestionable. Few players have shared dressing rooms and pitches with more world-class footballers than the former Barcelona and PSG star.

And in Neymar’s view, the standout midfielder in world football today is clear — and Arsenal almost signed him.

Neymar hails Arda Güler as world’s best midfielder

Real Madrid and Turkey star Arda Güler has continued his steady rise in Spain, developing into one of La Liga’s most technically gifted midfielders. His elegance on the ball, vision, and creativity have earned him growing recognition across Europe.

Arsenal were among the clubs monitoring Güler’s situation closely. The Gunners reportedly made enquiries last summer, hoping to replicate the success they enjoyed after prising Martin Ødegaard away from Real Madrid years earlier.

This time, however, Madrid had no intention of entertaining negotiations. Güler was considered untouchable — and events since then suggest why.

Speaking recently, Neymar was full of praise for the 20-year-old.

“Arda Güler is an amazing player. He has the quality, and right now, I think he is the best midfielder in the whole world,” Neymar said.

A future Galáctico in the making

It is easy to forget just how young Güler still is. At only 20, he is already trusted on the biggest stage at the Santiago Bernabéu — a rare feat in itself.

While Neymar’s claim will naturally divide opinion, there is no denying Güler’s trajectory. He became a regular figure for Real Madrid at a remarkably young age and has remained an important part of the squad under Xabi Alonso this season.

The next step in his evolution is clear: end product. With just three league goals so far this campaign, there is room for improvement. If Güler can begin contributing consistently in front of goal and push towards double figures, he will firmly place himself among the elite midfielders in world football.

Why Arsenal missed out

From Arsenal’s perspective, the interest was understandable. Güler fits the club’s profile perfectly — young, technically exceptional, and capable of operating between the lines.

However, unlike Ødegaard at the time of his move, Güler is already seen as a long-term cornerstone at Real Madrid. That reality makes any future transfer extremely unlikely.

For now, Arsenal supporters can only watch from afar as another potential star they once pursued continues to shine on the biggest stage.
